Papier in Venetie - 8

Dit is de "oogst" van mijn 1e week in Venetie. Al dwalend liep ik tegen 't ene na 't andere winkeltje aan. Je kunt hier ook beter zonder kaart in je hand lopen, dan zie je veel meer. Wel bij de hand voor als je het echt niet meer weet, maar erg groot is het niet. En overal staan bordjes naar S. Marco ofwel Rialto om je te kunnen orienteren. Voor het geval je de adressen toch zou willen opzoeken heb ik ze er bij gezet. (wordt vervolgd)

This is the result of my first week in Venice. Just wandering around I stumbled into many paper shops. I believe it's better to walk around here without a map because you see so much more. Just keep it within reach in case you do get lost, but it is not a very big place. And there are signs everywhere to either Rialto or San Marco. Papier in Venetië - 7 Kunst op papier

Mijn interesse voor papier en papierkunst is heel breed. Daar valt ook kunst op papier onder: tekeningen, aquarellen, collage. In mijn atelier heb ik een permanente mini tentoonstelling met mijn eigen werk maar ook wat werk van andere kunstenaars. In Venetië zal ik vast ook veel mooi werk te zien krijgen maar nu kijk ik vooral naar werk dat in Venetië gemaakt is. Ik ben benieuwd hoeveel daar van ook in de Venetiaanse musea te zien zal zijn. Ook naar aanleiding van het boek Paradijs Der Steden van J.J. Norwich over kunstenaars in Venetië in de 19e eeuw zijn dit momenteel mijn favorieten:

My interest for paper and paper art is extensive. It also includes art on paper: drawings, watercolor, collage. In my studio I have a permanent mini exhibition with my own work and work by other artists. 

I am sure that in Venice I will see a lot of great art but at the moment I am particularly interested in art that has been made in Venice. I am curious to see how much of that can be found in Venetian museums. Also through the book Paradise of Cities by J.J. Norwich about artists in Venice in the 19th century these are my favorites at the moment: (see above)

And of course Turner has to be in this short list as well. For my mum :-)

Papier in Venetië - 6 Ik ga op reis...

Ik ga op reis... en neem mee... Nou, niet deze enorme koffer die ik pas op een rommelmarkt gescoord heb! Ik heb het 3 seconden overwogen -leek me wel romantisch- maar aangezien ik geen personeel heb neem ik toch maar zo'n gewone rolkoffer mee. Overigens is dat het enige "verkeer" dat je 's avonds laat en 's ochtends vroeg in Venetië hoort: rolkoffers. Ratelende wieltjes op de geplaveide straten. Het galmt ook zo lekker in die steegjes! Kan iemand daar niet eens iets anders voor uitvinden? Graag geluiddempende wieltjes! ;-)

Maar wat moet er in, in die koffer. Dat is veel belangrijker. En als liefhebber van zo lang mogelijke voorpret en nog langere lijsten ben ik daar natuurlijk al tijden mee bezig. Een van de belangrijkste en meteen ook lastigste dingen is HET dag-/schets-/tekenboek. Iedere reis is dat weer een vraag: wat zijn de plannen, hoeveel tijd is er om ergens rustig te gaan zitten teken of schrijven. Aangezien het mij daar deze reis juist om te doen is moet het wel iets substantieels zijn. Maar hoe groot dan? Hoe dik? Wat voor papier? Je moet er lekker in kunnen tekenen - het moet makkelijk open slaan - maar ook schrijven, en vooral ook plakken, dus het moet ook dikker kunnen worden. Een spiraal? Het moet overal mee naar toe kunnen en niet te snel beschadigen, dus een stevige kaft en een koord of een elastiek er omheen.

Nou ben ik enigszins "verslaafd" aan boekjes en heb een kleine voorraad waar nog nooit iets mee gedaan is dus ik vond dat ik daar eerst maar tussen moest kijken. Het werd een boek met spiraal van Ikea, beschaafde kleur, maat A5, redelijk papier. Maar nadat die 2 weken onaangeroerd op m'n tafel heeft gelegen heb ik besloten dat 'ie toch niet voldoet aan bovenstaande eisen... Wat nu? Tja, wat doe je als je dozen- en boekenmaker bent.. Soms duurt het even voor je bij de voor de hand liggende oplossing komt.... (bij mij dan, laat ik voor mezelf spreken).

Zelf aan de slag dus! Eigenlijk maak niet zo vaak iets voor mezelf. Maar ik had nog steeds prachtig handgeschept papier uit Zweden, een stuk verkleurd leer, een benen knoop uit Denemarken en kralen en gemarmerd papier uit Venetië; als dat geen reisjournaal wordt!? In plaats van de workshop boekbinden die ik in Venetië zou willen doen maar (nog) niet kan vinden heb ik maar op internet gekeken en in de verschillende boeken die ik over boekbinden heb. Zie hier het resultaat van een regenachtige zondagmiddag. Ik ben blij! :-)

Paper in Venice - 6  I'm going traveling

I'm going traveling... and I'm taking... Well, not this huge suitcase I recently found in a flea market. I did consider it for 3 seconds - it seemed rather romantic - but since I don't have any staff I am taking an ordinary roller case. Did you know that this is about the only "traffic" you hear late at night and in the early morning in Venice: roller cases. Rattling wheels on the paved streets. And it really echoes in those narrow alleys! Can someone please invent something else!? Sound-absorbing wheels please! ;-)

But what goes in this suitcase? That is much more important. And as a lover of long anticipation and even longer lists I have of course been thinking about this for some time now. One of the most important and also trickiest things is THE diary/sketchbook. Every trip this question pops up; what are the plans, how much time will there be to sit down quietly and draw and write. Because that's the point of this journey it has to be something substantial this time. But how large? What kind of paper? It has to be comfortable to draw in - it has to open easily - but also to write and to stick things in so it must be able to expand. A spiral? It has to be easy to take but not to damage, so with a sturdy cover and maybe an elastic band or a cord.

As it happens I am slightly addicted to notebooks and I have a few in stock that are still empty. So I thought I had to look into those first. I chose a spiral-bound book from Ikea, a good color, size A5, decent paper. But after 2 weeks lying untouched on my table I decided it did not meet the above requirements. What to do? Well, what do you do when you are a box and book maker? Sometimes it takes some time to get to the obvious solution.. (well, I do anyway).

So.. work to do! I don't very often make something for myself. But I still had some wonderful handmade paper from Sweden, a faded piece of leather, a bone button from Denmark and marbled paper and beads from Venice: that has to make a great travel journal! Instead of the bookbinding course I wanted to take in Venice but can't find I looked on the internet and in some books I have on the subject. And here is the result of a rainy sunday afternoon. I am happy! :-)

Cartavenezia

In de reisgids die ik in oktober bij me had stonden een aantal interessante adressen. Met de winkel van Rosanna was ik al erg blij (zie deel 3) maar de meeste kon ik helaas niet vinden... Zijn ze al weer verdwenen of goed verborgen in een donker steegje? Voor de zekerheid ben ik aan een eigen lijst begonnen via internet. Alles wat ik daar niet terug kon vinden heb ik weer geschrapt. Een recensie kan ik natuurlijk pas later geven...

Paper in Venice - 5 Addresses

In the travel guide I brought with me last October there were several interesting addresses. I was very pleased with Rosanna's shop (see part 3) but most of them I could not find... Are they gone already or just very well hidden in some dark alley? Just in case I started my own list with the help of internet. Everything I could not find there I crossed again. A review I can of course not give you yet...

In the Calle Lunga (Santa Croce) appear to be more craftsmen: besides paper makers also silversmiths, iron forgers, printmakers an mosaic workers.

And last but not least a bookshop I definitely want to visit: Libreria Acqua Alta di Frizzo Luigi, Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa, Castello 5176 (NB this is another Calle Lunga, because in another district!)
