My favorite place for hand marbles is still Rosanna Corrò's shop, Carte Venezia (San Polo, Calle dei Cristi 1731, see part 3). In january she only opened at the weekends so she could make new marbles during the week. By my request she made some black and white ones because I was making boxes for Gek op Zwart/Wit (meaning "Mad for Black and White", from March 30 only a webshop). Besides, I never found the other shop called Cartavenezia (see part 5). In any case they're not in Calle Lunga anymore. At this address in Santa Croce there is now a shop with cheap Chinese souvenirs, alas like so many other places in Venice nowadays. There is however the Paper Owl: a nice girl with ditto shop but the marbles are not that special.
According to Rosanna the public is changing as well: less art lovers and more "ordinary" tourists. So paper and art lovers, if nowhere else, go to Venice! ;-) And if you are planning a trip then january is a very special time to be there. A lot less tourists of course but all the more locals. Everywhere there is work being done, building, restoring. The disadvantage is that not everything is open, like my favorite coffee shop at the Canal Grande. And when the lady from another cafe around the corner snapped at me she ruined my first day. But in Venice you can never feel blue for very long in my experience. My favorite place for a Spritz - Paradiso at the Giardini stop - was also closed but it wasn't really warm enough anyway. Just a friendly warning: thermal underwear is no luxury in january! Not because of frost but because of the omnipresent cold water.
In one of the last days I was there I discovered a new address at the Fondamente San Lorenzo (Castello, near the Questura). I knew the shop from a previous visit when it was nice but fairly standard. Now it appeared to be taken over by 2 men (Stefano Casati en Paolo Scalabrin) who make their own marbles and do so in a different style from Rosanna's (see the first photo) And apart from paper they also marble leather for beautiful notebooks! They were going to go online this spring but I have not found their website yet. For a next time :-)
Have fun!
